MDI or Isocyanate chemicals, also known as black chemicals, are curing chemicals often combined with white Polyols chemicals to create Polyurethane foam (foam PU) commonly used in the field of heat and sound insulation construction, insulation and other fields.
Production process
Isocyanates are produced from amines by phosgenation, i.e. treatment with phosgene:
These reactions take place through the mediation of a carbamoyl chloride (RNHC(O)Cl). Due to the hazardous nature of phosgene, the production of isocyanates requires special precautions.
Isocyanate chemical application
- Applications in rigid, semi-rigid, and integrated foams.
- Mainly used in spray and pouring Polyurethane foam (foam PU) applications is soundproof, thermally insulated, and highly compatible with polyols.
- Used for producing polyurethane adhesives, coatings, adhesives, and elastomers.
- Used as an admixture for many domestic industries: paints, printing inks, plastics and rubber, textiles, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals,... and metal surface finishing: polishing stainless steel, plating, layers anti-corrosion coating.
